Vitalik discusses the next steps for Ethereum after the Dencun upgrade, emphasizing internal scalability with Rollup

According to a report by “The Block,” Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, emphasized the need for internal scaling and parallelization of Layer 2 Rollups in his latest article published on Thursday, the 28th, after the completion of the Dencun hard fork earlier this month.

Vitalik pointed out that while the Dencun hard fork has been successful in reducing transaction costs for Rollups, it has also brought about some challenges. He mentioned that the usage of Ethereum’s Layer 2 network, Base, has surged after the Dencun upgrade, resulting in reaching its internal Gas limit and causing a surge in fees.

According to Vitalik, this highlights the need for change: in addition to optimizing data processing, Rollups should also undergo internal scaling to sustainably manage the increased activity. He wrote:

One of the solutions proposed by Vitalik focuses on the concept of parallelization, which involves enabling these Layer 2 solutions to process multiple transactions or computational tasks simultaneously, rather than sequentially. He stated that implementing parallelization strategies, such as those proposed in EIP-648, could benefit Rollups by allowing for parallel processing of multiple transactions in the EVM, thereby increasing scalability.

Vitalik listed parallelization as one of the methods that can improve Ethereum’s Layer 2 network, with other methods including data compression and optimistic data technologies such as Plasma and Validiums.

Buterin added that Ethereum’s development focus will gradually shift from Layer 1 issues to the application layer, with one future improvement involving Data Availability Sampling (DAS), which could expand the data space for each slot to 16 MB. Meanwhile, the network will continue to advance its layer-centric scaling strategy.
