Axie Infinity Founder: "3A" Has Long Become a Marketing Gimmick for Web3 Games

Vietnamese game publisher Sky Mavis, developer of the blockchain game Axie Infinity, pioneered the “play-to-earn” concept, attracting millions of players, some of whom even made a living from the game. However, Axie Infinity later experienced token price collapses and hacking attacks, leading some in the industry to label it as a scam.

Nevertheless, Aleks Larsen, co-founder of Sky Mavis, stated in an interview with DL News during the TOKEN2049 event in September that “Axie” is not finished and that “I think ‘Axie’ has achieved something for this industry.”

Web3 games aim to compete with Web2 games, with many projects promising visuals and gameplay comparable to top AAA games in the industry. However, as web3 develops, Larsen is increasingly concerned about games that fail to fully leverage the advantages of web3 technology and those that boast of being “AAA” games.

Larsen warns that the “AAA” game label has become a “marketing gimmick,” with teams focusing on indicators such as NFT floor prices or the number of developers they employ, rather than proving themselves through their work.

Games like “Star Atlas” and “Illuvium” have faced debates over whether their teams are large enough or have enough experience to deliver on their promises. Larsen holds a different view, stating that too many cooks spoil the broth, especially if they are borrowed from other studios. He says, “Industry insiders know how difficult long-term collaborations can be.”

Larsen advocates for an iterative development approach, emphasizing quick response to user feedback and working in a startup mode. He states that the initial version of Axie was “very low quality and very simple.” However, the industry is filled with projects that experience delivery delays, some of which are major contractors for Axie Infinity.

Larsen believes that such critics hinder the collaborative development of the industry, particularly those who have not made tangible contributions to actual projects. He hopes to collaborate with those who are truly in the market.
