According to a previous report by Zombit, Matter Labs, the developer of Ethereum L2 network zkSync, had registered “ZK” as a trademark in order to compete for the ZK token code with the already issued Polyhedra Network. Despite strong opposition from several prominent figures in the field of ZK technology, including the co-inventors of zero-knowledge proofs, Shafi Goldwasser and Silvio Micali, Polygon co-founder Sandeep Nailwal and Brendan Farmer, as well as StarkWare CEO Eli Ben-Sasson, Matter Labs still released a statement at that time, firmly stating that their purpose in applying for the ZK-related trademark was to ensure the free use of the term “ZK” in contexts such as “ZK Sync” and “ZK Stack”, whether one likes it or not, trademarks are the only available legal tools today.
