Hong Kong Privacy Commissioner's Office conducts search on Worldcoin for unauthorized collection of user iris data

According to a report by “Hong Kong 01”, the Hong Kong Privacy Commissioner’s Office executed a court order today (31st) to search six locations in Hong Kong associated with the cryptocurrency project Worldcoin, and requested relevant parties to hand over documents and data.

The Privacy Commissioner’s Office stated that the operation of Worldcoin in Hong Kong involves serious risks to personal data privacy, and it believes that the collection and processing of sensitive personal data by the organization may violate local privacy regulations. In order to safeguard citizens’ personal data privacy, the organization has initiated an investigation into Worldcoin in accordance with established procedures.

According to information collected by the Privacy Commissioner’s Office, individuals participating in Worldcoin need to allow the organization to collect their iris information through iris scanning in order to obtain a registration identity (World ID) and receive the cryptocurrency WLD for free. Rudy Fan, Acting Senior Personal Data Officer of the Criminal Investigation Division of the Privacy Commissioner’s Office, stated that identifying the responsible person is one of the investigation methods, but since the Office does not have the authority to shut down the six locations of Worldcoin, it can only urge citizens to be cautious.
