Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey has left the board of directors of Bluesky, a decentralized social media platform that he conceptualized and funded during his tenure as CEO of Twitter in 2019. Jack Dorsey himself revealed this news in a response to community questions on X.
At the same time, the official Bluesky account on its platform confirmed Jack Dorsey’s departure and stated that they are actively searching for new board members while expressing gratitude for Jack Dorsey’s help in launching and funding the project. However, neither Bluesky nor Jack Dorsey have explained the reasons behind his decision to leave.
In late 2019, Jack Dorsey announced the Bluesky project, stating on Twitter that the company had “funded a small independent team of five open-source architects, engineers, and designers to develop an open and decentralized social media standard.” Bluesky released a test version in March 2023 and became publicly available on February 7, 2024. According to their own statistics, there are currently approximately 5.6 million users.
Interestingly, from the interactions on the X platform, it appears that Jack Dorsey has recently been immersed in promoting open-source protocols. He has also recently unfollowed over 2,000 people for unknown reasons, reducing his following list to just three individuals: Elon Musk, Stella Assange (the wife of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange), and Edward Snowden.
