On May 2nd, the cross-chain interoperability protocol LayerZero officially announced that the first snapshot (Snapshot #1) has been completed and more information will be released soon.
As one of the most anticipated potential airdrop projects in the community, LayerZero’s brief announcement has been interpreted by the community as “the airdrop snapshot is completed, and the big one is coming.”
On May 3rd, Layer Zero officials once again announced that an important announcement would be issued that evening to “demonstrate continued trust in community members.” However, just as the community speculated whether LayerZero was about to announce detailed airdrop rules, the announcement finally issued by LayerZero was like a heavy blow to all users – the tokens will indeed be distributed, but multiple rounds of witch screening activities need to be conducted first.

According to the official document, when LayerZero formulated the token distribution plan, one key factor to consider was how to determine the highest quality user cluster. In LayerZero’s view, the highest quality users should be the most “persistent” users, and the so-called “persistence” is defined as those users who are most likely to continue using LayerZero in the future or continue their past usage habits.
On the evening of May 2nd, Bryan Pellegrino, co-founder of LayerZero, replied to the community on X, stating that the actual user base of the protocol is approximately 5.8 million addresses, covering all networks covered by LayerZero; and the official announcement last night revealed that LayerZero currently has nearly 6 million addresses.

Combining with previous airdrop cases in the industry, millions of addresses can be considered a large-scale distribution. Therefore, it is necessary for LayerZero to reduce the scope of the airdrop through mechanism design or witch screening, and distribute tokens to potential users in a way that is more in line with the expectations of the project party.
In the official information released by LayerZero, specific screening details have not been provided for the time being (possibly to prevent witches from self-checking and affecting the effect of the “self-disclosure” stage mentioned later), only a few examples of interactive behaviors that may be considered witches have been enumerated. Bryan also provided some supplementary explanations on personal X for some cases.
In short, interactive behaviors that may lead to an address being identified as a witch include:
Being a single person or entity but using dozens, hundreds, or thousands of addresses for batch interactions;
To facilitate the cross-chain transfer of NFTs between different chains, a “worthless” NFT was minted;
Using commonly used “witch brushing” applications such as Merkly, L2 Pass, L2 Marathon;
In order to leave interaction records on multiple networks, a minimal amount was transferred back and forth between different chains (such as $0.01);
If you think you are a witch, then you are likely a witch.
Regarding the judgment of the use of tools such as Merkly, some users questioned that this move may lead to large-scale “mistaken killings,” Bryan replied: “If you are a real user and have used Merkly to reduce gas costs, you may not be identified as a witch, but if you are only using Merkly to transfer assets back and forth, then you may be a witch.

According to LayerZero’s official disclosure, the witch cleansing activity will be conducted in three rounds.
The first round is the “self-disclosure” stage, which will last for 14 days. Users who suspect themselves of being witches can “self-disclose” through the window provided by LayerZero during this stage to retain 15% of the airdrop allocation.
It is worth mentioning that in order to facilitate the “self-disclosure” of the studio, LayerZero also “thoughtfully” provided an API tool for mass address submission.

The second stage is the “judgment” stage. LayerZero officials will conduct witch screening according to specific rules during this stage. The screening results will be announced on May 18th. Addresses identified during this stage will not receive any airdrop allocation.
The third stage is the “mutual accusation” stage, which will last from May 18th to May 31st. LayerZero encourages community users to report witch behaviors to each other. Successful informants can receive 10% of the airdrop allocation of the reported addresses.
Considering the disclosed schedule of LayerZero, the governance token of the protocol will most likely be officially issued after the “mutual accusation” stage ends on May 31st, so the expected issuance date should be in June.
For users who are looking forward to LayerZero’s airdrop, they need to survive a full month of witch cleansing activities before they can receive the final rewards. Considering the huge user base of LayerZero itself, combined with the reusability of witch labels in different projects, the witch cleansing activity initiated by LayerZero may not only be the largest witch cleansing activity in history, but the screening results may also have a profound impact on potential airdrops of other projects in the future.
