NEAR Foundation announced on Tuesday (30th) that the protocol working group will initiate testing for Phase 2 of Near sharding this week, with the launch on the mainnet expected in May this year.
One of the main benefits of implementing the new sharding is to significantly increase the already fast transaction throughput of NEAR by up to 10 times. Sharding is a unique scalability method of the blockchain that divides the chain into multiple parallel “shards”.
Phase 2 will introduce the most significant changes to the NEAR Protocol since its mainnet launch in 2020, with the biggest change being the implementation of stateless validation. NEAR Foundation stated that stateless validation is an innovative method of handling state changes or the process of updating all data states on the blockchain. Validators of NEAR will no longer need to locally maintain the state of the shards, but instead can obtain all necessary information for validating state changes from the network, known as “state witnesses”.
