Telegram Founder Pavel Durov Confirms Return to Dubai, Investigation by French Authorities Still Ongoing

The founder and CEO of the instant messaging software Telegram, Pavel Durov, stated in a post on Monday that after being detained in France for several months due to an investigation related to criminal activities on the Telegram platform, he has now returned to Dubai. He added that the relevant investigation procedures are still ongoing, but “it feels great to be home.”

Durov expressed gratitude to the judge for allowing him to return home and thanked his lawyers and team for their efforts, stating that they “have proven that Telegram has not only met but exceeded its legal obligations in terms of control, cooperation, and combating crime over the years.” He also expressed appreciation to the millions of supporters worldwide, saying it means a lot to him, and remarked, “There is nothing our community of one billion cannot overcome.”

Last August, as part of an investigation targeting Telegram, French authorities arrested Durov and accused him of operating a platform that facilitates illegal activities.

News of Durov being granted permission to leave France began circulating over the weekend, coinciding with a more than 15% surge in the native token TON of the blockchain The Open Network, which is closely related to Telegram. As of the publication of this article, TON was trading at approximately $3.42.
