Trump Takes Open Stance on Bitcoin
Opposition Softens
Host Laura Ingraham asked Trump in the program whether he would consider supporting Bitcoin, given its decentralized nature compared to CNBC, as well as its unique appeal among young people and the African American community.
In response, Trump acknowledged the growing popularity of Bitcoin and even observed that more and more people are using Bitcoin for payments:
“A lot of people are accepting it. And it’s growing, and I’m seeing people wanting to pay with Bitcoin, and you’re seeing some very interesting things. I have an open mind about it.”
However, Trump later added that he still adheres to his longstanding preference for the strong US dollar.
In 2019, Trump tweeted that he does not support Bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies, stating that they are not real money and describing them as “created out of thin air.” He reiterated his stance in 2021, criticizing Bitcoin as a scam against the US dollar.
Although Trump did not express much subjective opinion on Bitcoin, his softened stance on cryptocurrencies seems to be a significant shift from his previous views. Going from complete skepticism to cautiously acknowledging Bitcoin’s position in the economy, this may reflect Trump’s evolving understanding of Bitcoin or simply be an illusion created to appeal to young voters.
