According to a previous report by Zombit, Nexon, the developer of the popular online game “MapleStory,” originally planned to build a dedicated application chain called Polygon Supernet within the Polygon ecosystem as the infrastructure for its new chain game project “MapleStory Metaverse.” However, recent revelations indicate that Nexon has changed its mind and chosen to use the Avalanche blockchain instead of Polygon.
“MapleStory Metaverse” is a new project derived from the classic MMORPG game “MapleStory,” aiming to incorporate blockchain elements to create new gameplay and experiences for players. For example, in-game items will be tagged as NFTs, and players will be able to earn and collect NFT items through the game to unlock various benefits or functionalities within the entire ecosystem. All of this will be achieved through a dedicated application chain “subnetwork” within Avalanche. Nexon will utilize it to launch the first game in the “MapleStory Metaverse” series, “MapleStory N,” which is expected to be released on PC by the end of 2024.
As for why Nexon decided to no longer use Polygon and chose to collaborate with Avalanche instead, insiders revealed to foreign media Decrypt that the reason was Polygon Labs’ decision to stop supporting Polygon Edge (which allows application developers to build custom Ethereum-compatible chains) in order to focus on developing Polygon CDK at the end of last year. This prevented Nexon from continuing its development within the Polygon ecosystem, leading them to adopt Avalanche’s subnetwork framework instead.
Angela Son, the project lead for “MapleStory Metaverse,” stated:
